Homily (Reflection) for Weekday of
the Christmas Season:
06th January on the Gospel
1Jn 5:5-13;
Ps 147:12-15.19-20. (R. v. 12);
Mk 1:6-11 or Lk 3:23-38 or Lk 3:23.31-34.36.38.
Topic: Appearance deceives.
In today’s gospel, John the Baptist “was clothed with camel’s
hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.”
He proclaimed that the one who was to baptize with the Holy Spirit was coming
after him. In those days, Jesus came and was baptized by him. As he was coming
out of water, the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descended like a dove on
him. And a voice proclaimed from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you
I am well pleased.”
John who was described as such and who dwelt in the
wilderness was sent to prepare the way for the Lord, cf. Lk 7:27. He had the singular opportunity of both announcing the
coming of the Lord and also showing Him to the world, cf. Jn 1:29-34. Jesus also said of him, “I tell you, among those born
of women none is greater than John...” (Lk
7:28; Matt 11:11).
We often judge the people we meet by their appearances. And this
poses serious danger. Just imagine John considering his appearance being this
greatest of all born of women. Those words Jesus used to describe John can also
be used for a person you least imagine.
It is safer to treat everybody one sees very well. After all
Jesus warned us, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of
these my brethren, you did it to me” (Matt
25:40; cf. Matt 25:45). Be very careful as you treat others especially your
subordinates.
