But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel …. (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 24:19-21</b>). <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">These weighed them down as they moved along. Jesus joined them and explained all these to them using the scriptures beginning with Moses and all the prophets, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 24:27</b>. It is important to note here that the Moses and all the prophets Jesus used to teach the disciple was the bible. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Just like these disciples, we gather together with our burdens. In the celebration of the Mass, the congregation is given the opportunity to present to God at various stages what they come with – sorrows, joys, disappointments and so on. Readings from the bible are read and an ordained minister representing Jesus Christ helps the congregation (children of God) understand what bothers them based on the readings and supported with other biblical passages. This normally takes either the form of homily or sermon. The ordained minister is expected to bring the word of God to the level the people can understand. Just like Jesus made the disciples understand what happened, the homily helps the people look at their burdens with the light of the gospel. General intercessions and offerings conclude this part. Note that the offerings are meant for both the maintenance of the minsters and for the good of the poor, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 9:13; Rom 15:26; Gal 2:10</b>. Today however it is disheartening that many men and women of God see the offerings as something meant for them alone. Hence, the unhealthy competition with politicians and business men and women in material things – private jets among others. Some have even forgot that they are to preach the Word of God, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 14:19; Col 3:16; Tit 2:1, 3</b>. We must remember that the judgement of the ministers (teachers) will be very strict, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jas 3:1</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Furthermore, we read that when Jesus was talking to the disciples although their hearts were burning within them, their eyes were closed from recognizing Jesus, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 24:16, 32</b>. They remained in that state of blindness until Jesus “… took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him ….” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 24:30-31</b>). The words Jesus spoke to them prepared them for the breaking of the bread (Holy Eucharist). When we gather today, we must remember that we ought to break the word and the bread also. This is because, if the disciples remained blind until Jesus broke the bread, what do you think that happen when people gather, share the Word, collect offerings and tithes and disperse without breaking the bread? <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Again, Christ commanded us to break the bread and share the cup, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 22:19, 1Cor 11:24-25</b>. Paul did not mince words, “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 10:16</b>). For him, “as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 11:26</b>). And going through the bible, it is clear that this command was understood and upheld right from the time of the apostles. We read about the early Christians: “… they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Acts 2:42</b>, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Acts 2:46; 20:7, 11; 27:35)</b>. If Christ had given us this command and the apostles and those after them upheld it, where did things go wrong? Why do we disregard it today? Or is it better to obey men instead of God, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Acts 5:29</b>?<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">One day after a Nuptial (wedding) Mass one man came up to me and other ministers and queried why he was not allowed to receive the Holy Communion despite the fact that he is a Christian. In the gospel we read: “Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 7:6</b>). Partaking in the Holy Eucharist symbolize that although many we are one body, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 10:17</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Saint Paul in his First Letter to the Corinthians warns: <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 2pt 0in 0pt 0.7in; text-align: justify;"> <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Whoever … eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord … all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgement against themselves. For this reason many of you are weak and ill, and some have died (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 11:27, 29-30</b>). <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">It is better viewed as an act of love for one to be asked not to receive. It was dark and the wind made the sea rough for them. They were terrified when they saw Jesus coming towards them walking on the sea after they had rowed about three or four miles. He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">It is very easy to conclude that the sea became rough for Jesus’ disciples as a result of the wind. It is necessary to look beyond this.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">The gospel also tells us that it was dark. We remember the words of Jesus, “I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 8:12</b>). Again, everything obeys Jesus not excluding the wind and the sea, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 4:41; Matt 8:27; Lk 8:25</b>. It is evident that their primarily problem was their leaving Jesus on the mountain while crossing the sea. Hence, the wind and the sea could not obey them. We must also remember His words, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Jesus asked Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” Philip replied in his innocence, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” However, Andrew intervened, “There is a boy here who has five barely loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Jesus asked the people to sit down. He then took the loaves, after giving thanks shared them to the people. He did the same thing to the fish. When the people are satisfied, Jesus said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” They filled 12 baskets with the fragments.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We can learn a lot of things from this passage but we will highlight just two. Imagine one with only about 1000 dollars facing a problem that requires 100000 dollars. Giving thanks to God might be the last thing one will expect to find in his/her head. Jesus with five barely loaves and two fish before five thousand people first gave thanks to God. We ought to give thanks to God always and for everything, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Eph 5:20</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Jesus who can bring anything into existence out of nothing asked His disciples to avoid waste. Sometimes some think that they have surplus of something but God has never given anything in surplus to anybody. The problem is that some keep back others’ shares, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Ex 16:18; 2Cor 8:15</b>. What we suffer today is not poverty but lack of knowledge, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Hos 4:6</b>. True show of affluence is in transforming lives and not in wasting wealth as many do today thereby making others’ suffer. Just as the 12 baskets would feed so many more people, what we waste today can eradicate poverty in the world. God promised us a land in which we will lack nothing, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Deut 8:7-10; Ps 34:10</b>. The one who comes from heaven is above all.” The gospel also reads, “The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. Is 64:3</b>). The God in question is a God of justice, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Is 30:18</b>. Just as the good things He has prepared for those who love Him cannot even be imagined, so terrible are the things He prepared for those who hate Him that they cannot also be imagined. Christ warns us that those who are earthly will be thrown into hell “where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 9:48</b>). Imagine being under the torment of worm that never dies and fire that never quenches. The book of <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Revelation chapter 16</b> also tells us how terrible it will be. God sent His only Son for us to have eternal life by believing in Him. Christ, God’s only Son did not come into the world to condemn it. In the words of Saint Paul, “He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Col 1:13</b>). And Saint Peter wonderfully captured our call as Christians thus, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Pt 2:9</b>).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We “are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Thess 5:5</b>). Saint Paul therefore rightly cautions us to, “walk as children of light” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Eph 5:8</b>). Jesus charged His eleven apostles thus: “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. We must remember also that it is obligatory for every preacher to preach the Word of God. This reminds me of the mail from a friend September, 2016 requesting to know how true it is that one must be born again to be saved.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">This is very true. However, the true meaning of being a <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">born again</b> eludes many. Nicodemus first sought the meaning of born again. Jesus said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 3:5</b>). Again, we read from the gospel according to Saint Mark, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved...” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 16:16</b>). Therefore, being born again is synonymous with being baptized. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">However, baptism goes with obligations. While giving mandate to His disciples Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 28:19-20a</b>). <o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">That one after baptism fails to live out his/her baptismal vows does in no way prove that baptism is no longer the key to our salvation but that we must be careful. Thus, Jesus warns, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 7:21</b>).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The apostles understood what one must do to be saved. When the jailer asked Paul and Silas, “<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Sirs, what must I do to be saved</b>?
