One would have expected them to be appreciative by playing according to the rules. However, all the servants the man sent to collect his own share of the produce were either beaten up or killed. Not even his son was spared.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Psalmist rightly wrote, “The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Ps 24:1; cf. 1Cor 10:26</b>). And the book of Job reads, “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return...” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Job 1:21</b>). Saint Paul in his first letter to Timothy also wrote, “for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Tim 6:7</b>). He also asked, “What have you that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if it were not a gift?” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 4:7</b>).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The people who heard this parable from Jesus’ mouth were not aware that it was about them. In the same vein, many may be looking at this parable as a passage to show how bad the Jews were. He taught them and also healed those who needed to be cured. As the day was drawing to a close, His disciples came up with this suggestion, “Send the crowd away, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a deserted place.” But Jesus insisted, “You give them something to eat.” They were astonished and said, “We had no more than five loaves and two fish – unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” They were about five thousand men. He made them sit in groups of about fifty each. Jesus then took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and then gave them to the disciples to share to them. But when the disciples listened to Jesus and offered those meagre loaves and fish, the crowd was fed and what was left over filled twelve baskets. </span></div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;"> <span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">Many die today untimely of lack of basic necessities. As we celebrate the Corpus Christi today, Christ reminds us to offer ourselves for these to live just as He offered Himself for us to live. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Surely, we have different reasons but Christ insists, “You give them something to eat.” If we listen to Him as the disciples did, the world will move from <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Deficiency to superfluous</b>. But it depends on us. As a result, they saw Jesus as a big threat to their source of wealth and were determined to bring Him to an end. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">These men were leaders of the people both in the religious and civil matters. However, the love of money has made them wander away from God, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Tim 6:10</b>. Wait a minute, what about you and me? We all have areas very important to us. And some versions of the bible do not have verse 26.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Our reflection is on the first section. Jesus searched for fruits on a fig tree but found nothing but leaves. And the evangelist excused the fig tree, “...it was not the season for figs.” We remember that there is a season for everything, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Eccl 3:1</b>. Yet, Jesus did not excuse the fig tree that failed to bear fruits outside the season for figs but cursed it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Let us look beyond the fig tree out there because through the prophet Isaiah God said, “the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Is 5:7</b>). By implication, every Israelite is a vine. He/she who plants a vineyard or a fig tree ought to eat of its fruits, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 9:7; Deut 20:6</b>. And God who planted Israel expects it to bear fruits. They include: to fear Him, to walk humbly in all His ways, to love Him, to do justice, to love kindness, to serve Him with all their hearts and with all their soul, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Deut 10:12; Mic 6:8</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div> <br /> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;"> <span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">God expects these fruits in the proper season. And this according to the book of Deuteronomy is at all times including the old age, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Deut 11:1. 6:24; Ps 92:14</b>.
