the things that come out are what defile.” He explained this to His disciples in

For it is from
within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft,
murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander,
pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Jerusalem in yesterday’s gospel frowned at what Jesus’ disciples did because
they were very much concerned about the tradition of the elders, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 7:1-5</b>. However, Jesus stressed in
today’s gospel where we ought to focus our attention, the self. Regrettably,
many rarely focus on themselves because of their belief that everything evil
comes from the outside, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 6:42</b>.

Society of Jesus and was a successful preacher of the Gospel. With twenty-five

parts of the world. Often these attacks are carried out under the pretext of
defending the tradition.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Jesus and His disciples were attacked in today’s gospel by the
Pharisees and the scribes for the same reason. Their reason was that some of
the disciples ate without first washing their hands according to the tradition
of the elders. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">They abandoned God’s commandment for human tradition. Jesus summarized
this with a quotation from the prophet Isaiah, “This people honours me with
their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts as doctrines” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk
7:6-7</b>; cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Is 29:13</b>).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Tradition is very good and also necessary. It is “a belief, a

However, tradition is not something static. Borrowing the words of Archbishop
Albert Kenechukwu Obiefuna of the blessed memory, tradition grows, learns new
things, goes to school, and so on. Recall how we communicated with others that were
not living in the same vicinity with us, how we travelled, how twins were
treated, and so on. Today, all these have changed in most parts of the world
for good and their changes have become parts of tradition.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

form of idolatry and evils take place in the name of tradition. People have rejected
good aspects of the tradition of our elders like honesty, brotherly love, and
so on to perpetrate evils all in the name of tradition. And this is what the
church as the body of Christ condemns. We must live as God’s children just like
Saint Paul Miki and his companions did.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Jesus healed so many people as one can see both in today’s gospel and so many
other passages. But He healed the whole man. Hence sometimes while healing He

of the body, remember your soul which is the most important. Saint Agatha showed

labour, and so on. There are stipulated times for each of them. However, labour
can also come up as an emergency at any time. Because emergency labours are not
in the timetable, they always encroach into other activities. Those days, when it
encroaches into the time for prayers, some would not like to leave it for
prayers because it must be done. They normally cite a maxim wrongly attributed
to Saint Benedict of Nursia: ‘to work is to pray’.</span></div>

injunction together with the women and Mary, Jesus’ mother, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Acts 1:14</b>. The apostles also went up to

Mahatma Gandhi “is a confession of one’s own unworthiness and weakness” but we
must also do our work</span>. Let us uphold the correct maxim of Saint Benedict

without a shepherd. But could it be that people were not assigned to care for
them? Surely a lot but they were feeding themselves instead of the sheep, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Ezek 34:2</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

on? Again, how can our flock be described – sheep with or without a shepherd?
And again, have we left the sheep for some other things – pleasure, money,

the temple guided by the Holy Spirit. He took the child in his arms and praised

fact, we are not our own, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 6:19</b>.
In other words, just as every first born in Israel is set apart for God, each
and every one of us is also set apart for God not just because we have been
bought but also because each of us is a firstborn, <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Heb 12:22-23; Jas 1:18; Rom 8:23; 11:16</b>. Therefore, in today’s
feast we present ourselves to Christ who paid for our sins with His life, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Cor 15:3; Gal 1:4; 1Jn 2:2. 4:10</b>. Thus
Saint Paul in his letter to the Romans pleads, “I appeal to you therefore,
brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

of the Presentation of our Lord do not forget to present yourself. Each of us
must therefore present him/herself to God today as one approved, a workman who
has no need to be ashamed, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">2Tim 2:15</b>.
We must save ourselves from destruction by dedicating ourselves to God, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">2Pt 2:1</b>. God is waiting for you and me

authority over the unclean spirits. He “ordered them to take nothing for their
journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear
sandals and not to put on two tunics” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk
6:8-9</b>). They should stay in any house where they are welcomed until they
leave the place and should shake off the dust on their feet while leaving the
place where they are not welcomed. The twelve went and proclaimed repentance,
cast out many demons, and anointed many who were sick and cured them.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Looking at Jesus’ instruction to the twelve it looks as if
God was about to repeat what He did during the Israelites’ journey to the
promised land; they spent forty years in the wilderness yet their clothes did not
worn out, and their sandals did not worn off their feet; cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Deut 29:5</b>. He also provided bread,
meat, and water for them all through their journey, cf.<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"> Ex 15:23-25; 16:4, 10-15, 21, 35</b>;<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"> 17:2-6</b>. Otherwise, how could they survive in the mission?<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Today’s gospel has two parallels; <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 10:5-11</b> and <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 9:1-6</b>.
And in <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matthew chapter 10 verse 10</b> there
is a clue to how Jesus wanted them to survive; <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">labourers deserve their food</b>. One might again ask who was to
provide the food. In the gospel according to Saint Luke Jesus sheds more light
to this, “Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide,
for the labourer deserves to be paid.... eat what is set before you” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 10:7,8</b>).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";">Make sure you provide for your ministers. If ministers of God
leave their work in search of bread, bag, money, tunics and so on surely they
will find them but not without inflicting serious injuries to the souls they
are to take care off. Simply put, souls will be lost. However, fellow servants ought
to remember Pauline maxim, “If anyone will not work, let him not eat” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">2Thess 3:10</b>). <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
