Homily (Reflection) for Friday after Epiphany of the Lord (8th January, 2016)

1Jn 5:5-13;
Ps 147:12-15.19-20. (R. v. 12)
Lk 5:12-16.

Topic: Seek God’s will.
We read in the Psalms: “I delight to do thy will, O my God ...” (Ps 40:8). And Christ teaches that we should not seek God’s will only when things are going as we want them, cf. Matt 6:10; 26:42.

In today’s gospel Jesus was met by a leper who bowed with his face to the ground and pleaded: “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean” (Lk 5:12; cf. Lk 18:13). Although this leper was in dire need of healing and was also aware that Jesus can make it happen but he never lost the sight that God’s will must be done always.

Just like this leper we know that God can do all things, cf. Matt 19:26; Mk 10:27; Lk 1:37; 18:27. Again Jesus also tells us to ask, and it will be given to us; to seek, and we will find; to knock, and it will be opened to us, cf. Matt 7:7; Lk 11:9. But our wills will not be substituted for God’s.

So as we seek for solutions to difficulties that bedevilled us and our environment, we must consider God’s will first. Certainly it is not easy to surrender to God’s will completely. Hence it is important to ask God to teach us how to do His will, cf. Ps 143:10. We must always be conscious of the fact that God takes care of all of us, cf. Matt 6:25-26. God has plans for our welfare and not for harm, to give us a future with hope, cf. Jer 29:11.

Bible Reading: Prov 3:1-12; Matt 6:25-34.

Thought for today: Your will be done, cf. Matt 6:10.

Let us pray: May the good Lord teach us how to do His will in every situation – Amen.
