Homily (Reflection) for Thursday after Epiphany of the Lord (7th January, 2016)

1Jn 4:19 – 5:4;
Ps 71:1-2.14-15.17. (R. cf. v. 11)
Lk 4:14-22.

Topic: Our anointing and mission.
Jesus read out in today’s gospel about Himself as prophesied by the prophet Isaiah:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour (Lk 4:18-19; cf. Is 61: 1 – 2).

Jesus explained the passage to the people thus: “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Lk 4:21). We are sent just as the Father sent the Son, cf. Jn 20:21. And we have been anointed also, cf. 1Jn 2:20. The problem is the fulfilment of the reason why we are anointed and what we are sent to do.

Although Jesus anointed us and sent to take care of the vulnerable ones in our society (cf. Lk 14:13), we have no time and place for them even in our churches. Seats are decorated and reserved for the rich with no assurance that they will come to church whereas the poor stand sometimes under the sun.

God wants us to take care of all but especially the most vulnerable in our society both as individuals and groups. Concentrating on the rich robs one the eternal reward, cf. Lk 14:14.

Have good plan/s for the most vulnerable ones.

Bible Reading: 1Jn2:18-28; Lk 14:7-14.

Thought for today: What plan/s do you have for the poor?

Let us pray: God help us to live out always our baptismal obligations – Amen.

Dear child of God,
