Sixtus II. He was martyred four days after Pope Saint Sixtus II, probably
during the persecution of Emperor Valerian. Lawrence was charged with the
responsibility for the material goods of the Church, and the distribution of
alms to the poor. He put together the remaining money including the proceeds
from the sacred vessels he sold and distributed all to the poor, widows and
orphans of Rome when he knew that he would be arrested. When the prefect of
Rome demanded for the Church’s treasure, Lawrence gathered a great number of
blind, lame, maimed, leprous, orphaned and widowed persons and presented them
to him saying, “These are the treasure of the Church.”<a href="file:///C:/Users/Fr.%20Moses/Desktop/Weekday%20Homilies/Daily%20Tonic%20for%20Year%20I%20(2020-2021)/Ordinary%20Time%20(I)/Nineteenth%20Week%20in%20Ordinary%20Time%20(I)%20(2021).docx#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn1;" title=""><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 110%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[1]</a>  In great anger, he condemned Lawrence to a
slow, cruel death. He was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire that
roasted his flesh little by little. Before he died, he prayed that the city of
Rome might be converted to Jesus and that the Catholic Faith might spread all
over the world.<a href="file:///C:/Users/Fr.%20Moses/Desktop/Weekday%20Homilies/Daily%20Tonic%20for%20Year%20I%20(2020-2021)/Ordinary%20Time%20(I)/Nineteenth%20Week%20in%20Ordinary%20Time%20(I)%20(2021).docx#_ftn2" name="_ftnref2" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn2;" title=""><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 110%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[2]</a><o:p></o:p>

Topic: A grain of wheat. <o:p></o:p>

Jesus said that a grain of wheat must fall into the earth and
die to produce much fruit. And “Those who love their life lose it, and those
who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” Christ’s
servants must follow Him and will be where He is. The Father honours whoever
serves Christ.<o:p></o:p>

This grain of wheat in today’s gospel refers to us, cf. Matt 13:37-38. Jesus tells us that the
reason He chose us is to bear fruit that will last, cf. Jn 15:16. Saint Paul also writes that we belong to Him who raised
us from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God, cf. Rom 7:4. Jesus also says that one will
prove his/her discipleship by bearing much fruit, cf. Jn 15:8. So Christ is telling us that we must fall into the ground
and die because without bearing fruits we cannot expect reward.<o:p></o:p>

Saint Lawrence fell into the earth, died, and produced much
fruits. He did not love his life. Hence he kept it for eternal life. Whoever
wants to keep his/her life must also fall into the ground like Saint Lawrence.
But we all must not fall into that same grill. However, we must accept any
ground that pleases God so as to produce fruits for Him.<o:p></o:p>

Bible Reading: Lk 14:25-33.<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: Discipleship has a price (cf. Lk 14:26-33).<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: Lord, give us the grace to fall into
any ground that pleases you – Amen.<o:p></o:p>

Deut 10:12-22;<o:p></o:p>

Ps 147:12-15.19-20. (R. v.12);<o:p></o:p>

Matt 17:22-27.<o:p></o:p>

Topic: Giving offence. <o:p></o:p>

Giving offence puts one off and might probably degenerate
into enmity. Jesus did not even argue with them on its legality. Some might
judge this as injustice. Saint Paul writes, “To have lawsuits at all with one
another is defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be
defrauded?” (1Cor 6:7).<o:p></o:p>

Provoking others closes the door of communication. Hence
Saint Paul advices, “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring
them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Eph 6:4). Again, “Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they
become discouraged” (Col 3:21).<o:p></o:p>

Not reasoning in the same direction is not an excuse to give
offence to others. We must live out Christ’s command, “Love your enemies and pray
for those who persecute you” (Matt 5:44).<o:p></o:p>

Bible Readings: 1Cor 6:1-11.<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: ... love one another (Rom 13:8).<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: May the God of steadfastness and
encouragement grant us the grace to live in harmony with one another – Amen
(cf. Rom 15:5).<o:p></o:p>

Ps
33:2-9 (R. V. 9);

Eph
4:30–5:2;

Jn 6:41-51.

“A certain minister
was disturbed to see a shabby old man go into his church at noon every day and
come out again after a few minutes. What could he be doing? He informed the
caretaker and asked him to question the man. After all, the place contained
valuable furnishings. ‘I go to pray,’ the old man said in reply to the
caretaker’s questioning. ‘Come on,’ said the other, ‘you are never long enough
in the church to pray.’ ‘Well, you see,’ the shabby old man went on, ‘I cannot
pray a long prayer, but every day at 12 o’clock, I just come in and say,
‘Jesus, it’s Jim,’ and wait a minute and then come away. It’s just a little
prayer, but I guess He hears me.’

“When Jim was injured some time
later and taken to the hospital, he had a wonderful influence in the ward.
Grumbling patients became cheerful and often the ward would ring with laughter.
‘Well, Jim,’ said the sister to him one day, ‘the men say you are responsible
for this change in the ward. They say you are always happy.’

“Yes, sister, I am. I can’t help being
happy. You see, it’s my visitor. Every day he makes me happy.’

“‘Your visitor?’ The sister was
puzzled. She noticed that Jim’s chair was always empty on visiting days, for he
was a lonely old man, with no relations. ‘Your visitor? But when does he come?’

“‘Every day,’ Jim
replied, the light in his eyes growing brighter. ‘Yes, every day at 12 o’clock
he comes and stands at the foot of my bed. I see him and he smiles and says,
‘Jim, it’s Jesus’” (Fuller, G. (2010). Stories for all seasons. Mumbai: St
Pauls, pp. 88-89).

explain to the Jews and in fact to all of us that He is the bread that came
down from heaven for the life of the world:<o:p></o:p>

Very truly, I tell you, whoever
believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna
in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from
heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came
down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread
that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh (Jn 6:47-51).

Jesus’ teaching made the Jews
uncomfortable. Hence, they complained: “... ‘Is not this Jesus, the son of
Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down
from heaven’?” (Jn 6:42). The true
bread which is Jesus’ Body and Blood cannot be compared with the manna their
ancestors ate, which although satisfied those who ate it but could not offer
eternal life. Jesus, the bread of life not only give bodily satisfaction but
ultimately eternal life to all who accepts Him, cf. Jn 6:35, 48.

In the bible, Jesus was referred to
both by His disciples (cf. Jn 20:16),
friends (cf. Jn 11:28), the scribes
and the Pharisees (Lk 19:39; Jn 3:2; 8:4)
and even by Himself (cf. Lk 22:11; Jn 13:13-14) as the Teacher. Yet some
of these people who acknowledged Him as Teacher refused to listen to His
teaching: “I am the bread of life” (Jn
6:48). Today, more people refer to Jesus as their Lord, Teacher, Saviour,
God, and so on. Just like the time of historical Jesus, some who refer to Jesus
as their Lord, Teacher, Saviour, God and so on reject Christ’s Body and Blood,
the bread of life which is from heaven offered to us as a pledge of eternal
life. For some, they are mere piece of bread and wine. That the Jews knew Mary,
the mother of Jesus Christ and Joseph, His foster father did not remove the
fact that Jesus is the bread of life from heaven. Likewise, the appearance of
the Body and Blood of Jesus in the form of bread and wine did not remove the
fact that they are His real Body and Blood.

Let us take just one account of the
institution of the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ (Holy
Communion) which took place during His Last Supper with His disciples, as
recorded by Saint Paul. Jesus

...took a loaf of bread, and when he
had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do
this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way he took the cup also, after supper,
saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you
drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink
the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes (1Cor 11:23-26).

My dear brothers and sisters, we
must recall God’s complain through the prophet Malachi: “A son honours his
father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honour?
And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the LORD of hosts to you...’” (Mal 1:6). In the same vein, if Jesus is
our teacher, why do we reject His teaching: “I am the bread of life”? We should
accept this eternal life-giving bread freely offered to us by Jesus. He is our
Teacher. He knows better than all of us put together. Rejecting the bread of
life freely given is tantamount to freely accepting everlasting death. Just
like the case we see in our introductory story, accepting Jesus is not just for
the eternal life. Jesus calling us friends is not just a mere lip service, cf. Lk 12:4; Jn 15:15. However, it has a
price tag, doing what He commands us, cf. Jn
15:14.

Bible
Reading: Jn 13:1-20; 1Cor 11:23-26.<o:p></o:p>

Thought
for today: Do you obey Jesus, our teacher?

Let
us Pray: Jesus, our Teacher, we are aware that we have
resisted your teaching in different ways. We pray for your grace to be
completely obedient to you – Amen.<o:p></o:p>

son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; he often falls into the
fire and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, but they
could not cure him” (Matt 17:15-16).
Jesus replied, “You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I
be with you? How much longer must I put up with you?” Jesus rebuked the demon,
it came out of the boy and he was cured instantly.<o:p></o:p>

Had it being that the man did not run to Jesus, the situation
of the boy would either remain or might even worsen. He would have gone home
disappointed and dejected.<o:p></o:p>

In our own case, where do we put our trust? Often it is
either in this or that man or woman of God, both real and fake. Hence, a good
number go home disappointed. The Psalmist rightly noted, “Surely everyone stands
as a mere breath. Surely everyone goes about like a shadow. Surely for nothing
they are in turmoil” (Ps 39:5-8).
Note that those men and women of God are inclusive.<o:p></o:p>

Nevertheless “Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount
Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever” (Ps 125:1). The Psalmist also exhorts, “Trust in the LORD, and do
good; so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security” (Ps 37:3). And in the book of Proverbs we also read, “Trust in the
LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight” (Prov 3:5). Our Lord is an everlasting
rock, cf. Is 26:4.<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: Where is your trust?<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: Lord, give us the grace to remain
always faithful to you – Amen.<o:p></o:p>

17:1-8; Mk 9:2-8; Lk 9:28-36; 2Pt 1:16-18. In all the synoptic gospels,
this took place shortly after Jesus first foretold His Passion, death, and
resurrection. According to Tradition, this took place on Mount Tabor. This
feast started in the East about fourth century and four centuries later, it
spread to the West. Pope Callixtus III elevated the Transfiguration of the Lord
to a Feast and extended it to the universal Church. He established 6th
August, the day the news of the defeat of the Turks at Belgrade by the
Crusaders on 22nd July, 1456 reached Rome for its celebration. It
also coincided with the day the first church that was built there in the fourth
century was dedicated.<o:p></o:p>

Topic: After the Baptism. <o:p></o:p>

About eight days after Jesus foretold His Passion and death,
He took with Him Peter, James, and John up on the mountain to pray. The
appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became dazzling white while
praying. Moses and Elijah appeared and discussed with Jesus on His Passion and
death. Peter said to Jesus while they were about leaving, “Master, it is good
for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and
one for Elijah”. A cloud overshadowed them and a voice came from the cloud
saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” <o:p></o:p>

Although Jesus and the duo discussed about His Passion and
death, Peter never rebuked instead he wanted to remain there because of the
glimpse of Christ’s glory. This is in line with the quotation, “What no eye has
seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for
those who love him” (1Cor 2:9).<o:p></o:p>

Earlier when Jesus was baptized, a voice came, “You are my
Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased” (Lk 3:22; cf. Mat 3:17; Mk
1:11). Therefore, what was said about Him when He was baptized was also
said at the climax of His public ministry. <o:p></o:p>

At baptism, our sins were completely washed away, cf. Acts 22:16; Gal 3:27; 1Pt 3:21. We are
born again as sons and daughters of God, cf. 2Cor 6:18; 1Cor 12:13. We were raised from death by the glory of
the Father at baptism for us to walk in newness of life, cf. Rom 6:4; Col 2:12. The issue is the
state we are now after the Baptism. What is in heaven cannot be compared with
whatever that distracts us here on earth.<o:p></o:p>

Bible Reading: Rom 6:1-13; Col 2:6-19.<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: Are you still God’s chosen one?<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: Lord, restore us to the state we
were when baptized – Amen.<o:p></o:p>

Our Lord Jesus Christ – Have mercy on
us!<o:p></o:p>

Matt
16:13-23.<o:p></o:p>

Topic: The road to success. <o:p></o:p>

Probably, the apostles would be expecting the sharing of
positions when He began to tell them what awaited Him; “great suffering at the
hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the
third day be raised.” Hence, Peter took Him aside and rebuked Him, “God forbid
it, Lord! This must never happen to you.” Surprisingly Jesus replied to Peter,
“Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting
your mind not on divine things but on human things.”<o:p></o:p>

The road that leads to success is hard and its gate narrow
and those who find it are few, cf. Matt
7:14. Saint Paul writes about Jesus, <o:p></o:p>

<blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;">...though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality
with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of
slave ... he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death....
Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every
name (Phil 2:6-9).</blockquote></blockquote></blockquote>

The road to success is not an easy one. Whoever wants success
must certainly work towards that, cf. Rom
8:17. <o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: Walk towards success.<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: Lord, give us the fortitude to
overcome all the trials on the road to success – Amen.<o:p></o:p>

1786 – August 4, 1859) was born in Dardilly, France. He was raised in a
Catholic home and the family often helped the poor and housed St. Benedict
Joseph Labre when he made his pilgrimage to Rome. It was very difficult for him
to comprehend Latin lectures. He was eventually ordained a deacon in June 1815
and a priest on August 12, 1815. Fr. Vianney was appointed parish priest of the
Ars parish in 1818. He spent 11 to 12 hours at confession during winter and about
16 hours during summer. He refused to retire. By 1853, Fr. Vianney had
attempted to run away from Ars four times to become a monk. He was the champion
of the poor. On October 3, 1873, Pope Pius IX proclaimed him “Venerable” and on
January 8, 1905, Pope Pius X beatified him. St. John Vianney was canonized on
May 31, 1925.<a href="file:///C:/Users/Fr.%20Moses/Desktop/Weekday%20Homilies/Daily%20Tonic%20for%20Year%20I%20(2020-2021)/Ordinary%20Time%20(I)/Eighteenth%20Week%20in%20Ordinary%20Time%20(I)%20(2021).docx#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn1;" title=""><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 110%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[1]</a><o:p></o:p>

Topic: When God appears silent.<o:p></o:p>

In the district of Tyre and Sidon, a Canaanite woman kept
shouting after Jesus, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is
tormented by a demon.” Jesus was silent. The disciples urged Him to send her
away. Kneeling before Him, she prayed, “Lord, help me.” Jesus replied, “It is
not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” And the woman
answered, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their
master’s table.”<o:p></o:p>

Often there are complaints that God is silent. Sometimes, it
even takes the nature of accusation. The Psalmist rightly questions, “He who
planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?” (Ps 94:9).<o:p></o:p>

The letter to the Hebrews reads, “...faith is the assurance
of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Heb 11:1). Faith when tested produces endurance and also reveals
its genuineness, cf. Jas 1:3; 1Pt 1:7.
God said that after testing, “They will call on my name, and I will answer
them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is our
God.’”cf. Zech 13:9.<o:p></o:p>

Jesus’ silence tested the woman’s faith. Hence Jesus finally
said to her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.”
In the same vein, we must continue to call on God until He hears our cry. Our souls
must wait for God alone because our hope and salvation come from Him alone, cf.
Ps 62:1, 5. God also said, “...my righteous
one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in
him” (Heb 10:38).<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: ...endurance produces character (Rom 5:4).<o:p></o:p>

After
praying, He walked on the sea towards His disciples early in the morning. When
they saw Him, they were terrified and said, “It is a ghost!” He immediately
reassured them, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”<o:p></o:p>

Peter with Jesus’ approval walked towards Him on the water,
“But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to
sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’” Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand,
caught him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” The wind
dropped immediately they got into the boat. The occupants of the boat worshiped
Him saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”<o:p></o:p>

Peter’s sinking resulted from lack of faith. We must always
fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, and keep our
faith, even when we say that we are greatly afflicted, cf. Heb 12:2; Ps 116:10. It is through faith that the children of God
will overcome the world, cf. 1Jn 5:4.
And faith is the shield with which one can quench all the flaming darts of the
evil one, cf. Eph 6:16.<o:p></o:p>

Children of God walk by faith, not by sight, cf. 2Cor 5:7. It is only through faith that
one can stand, cf. Rom 11:20. Only
those who have faith will be blessed like Abraham, cf. Gal 3:9. Let everyone examine him/herself to see whether he/she is
still holding to the faith lest one might sink without knowing it, cf. 2Cor 13:5. Our faith is our foundation.<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: Why are you afraid? Have you no faith? (Mk 4:40)<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: Lord, “Increase our faith” – Amen
(cf. Lk 17:5).<o:p></o:p>

place where He met a great crowd. He had compassion for them and cured their
sick. In the evening, the disciples came up with this suggestion, “This is a
deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may
go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus replied, “They
need not go away; you give them something to eat.” And not even the fact that
they had only five loaves and two fish could change this. He took the five
loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed, broke, and gave them to His
disciples who shared them to the crowds already seated. After the crowds had
their fill, they filled twelve baskets with the leftover.<o:p></o:p>

God created humankind, cf. Gen 1:27; 2:7, 21-22. And every human being is made up of body and
soul. And since creation, God cares for the whole person as replete in the
bible. In the gospels especially, Jesus never forgot any part of human being.
He also empowered His ministers to follow suit, cf. Matt 10:5-8; Lk 10:5-9.<o:p></o:p>

Often, many tend to focus their whole attention on the soul
and forget the body. And like the apostles, we always have so many reasons to
support this. Again, others focus their whole attention on the body and forget
the soul. God wants us to care for ourselves entirely without forgetting any
part – body and soul.<o:p></o:p>

Bible Readings: 1Jn 3:11-24.<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: God loves and cares for both our body and soul.<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: Lord, help us to care for the whole
person – Amen.<o:p></o:p>

In
Father Gerard Fuller’s work, we read: “A farmer brought a load of wheat to the
elevator in a nearby town. He stopped at a restaurant and sat down near a group
of young fellows who were acting up, shouting at the cook, and heckling the
waitress. When his meal was set before him, the old gentleman bowed his head to
offer a prayer. One of the smart-alecks thought he would have some fun with the
farmer, so he shouted: Hey, Pop, does everyone do that where you come from?”
Calmly the old man turned toward the lad and in an equally loud voice replied:
“No, son, the pigs don’t” (Fuller, G. (2010). Stories for all seasons.

Sunday’s gospel (Jn 6:1-15) with
five loaves and two fishes, Jesus and His disciples crossed the sea to
Capernaum. And in today’s gospel, we see that same crowd got into “boats and
went to Capernaum looking for Jesus” (Jn
6:24).<o:p></o:p>

Bearing in mind that every miracle
is for us to believe, (cf. Jn 10:25.38;
Matt 11:20-24) one would think that they were looking for Jesus because
they had seen the mighty works and believed in Him. However, Jesus who knows
the thoughts of man (cf. Ps 94:11) said
to them in reply: “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because
you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves” (Jn 6:26). By implication, they were
looking for more loaves and not for Jesus.

Although they had been fed with just
five loaves and two fishes, yet they demanded for sign which according to them
would made them believe. Jesus is God’s sign to the world (cf. 1Jn 4:10). During His presentation in
the temple the blessed Simeon prophesied, “This child is destined for the
falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed
so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed ...” (Lk 2:34-35). Hence, when the crowd requested for a sign Jesus
offered them Himself as a sign in these words: “I am the bread of life.  Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and
whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (Jn 6:34).

Jesus’ vital advice to the crowd and
us as well is “Do not work for food that perishes, but for the food that
endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him
that God the Father has set his seal” (Jn
6:27). This advice is important today more than ever because the crazy
quest for signs and wonders has eaten too deep into both the hierarchy and the
laity. Many look today “after their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ” (Phil 2:21). Most of the things we
pursue today do not gear towards our salvation. There is urgent need for all of
us – the laity and the clergy to “... seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well” (Matt 6:33). It is no longer news that
some Christians not excluding the clergy have sought evil powers for miracles.
We are rightly cautioned, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the
spirits to see whether they are of God; for many false prophets have gone out
into the world” (1Jn 4:1). Saint
Paul explained further,

The coming of the lawless one is
apparent in the working of Satan, who uses all power, signs, lying wonders, and
every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they
refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a
powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is false, so that all who have
not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned (2Thess 2:9-12).

In the words of the prophet, “Every
one deceives his neighbour, and no one speaks the truth; they have taught their
tongue to speak lies; they commit iniquity and are too weary to repent” (Jer 9:5). The prophesy of Saint Paul is
fulfilled, “...the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching,
but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit
their own likings” (2Tim 4:3).

In our introductory story, the
farmer rightly told the young fellow who wanted to have some fun with him: “No,
son, the pigs don’t” pray to God. And as humans, we ought to look for God and
not just for what we want.
