cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your manservant and
your maidservant may rest as well as you (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Deut

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Sabbatical laws prohibit a lot of things. They include
lightning a fire, (cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Ex 35:3</b>),
carrying load (cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jer 17:21, 22; Jn
5:10</b>), walking more than half a mile, (cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Acts 1:12</b>) and many more. And the penalty is death, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Ex 31:14, 15. 35:2</b>. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">However, Jesus’ disciples plucked some heads of grain, rubbed
them in their hands, and ate as He walked through the grainfields in today’s
gospel on a Sabbath. The Pharisees questioned “Why are you doing what is not
lawful on the Sabbath?”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">In reply, Jesus took their minds back to when David and his
men ate the bread of Presence which was lawful for priests alone. He also
reminded them in another text that “on the Sabbath the priests in the temple
profane the Sabbath, and are guiltless” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt
12:5</b>; cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Num 28:9</b>). The people
also circumcised on Sabbath, (cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn
7:22</b>); pulled their children and animals that fell into well on a Sabbath
day, (cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 14:5; Matt 12:11</b>);
untied their animals from the manger and led them away to water them, (cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 13:15)</b>, and so on. Therefore they
fought over letters.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Jesus queried in <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mark
chapter 3 verse 4</b>, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm,
to save life or to kill?” Similar questions abound, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 6:9. 14:3</b>. Why then should they be angry because He made a man’s
body well on a Sabbath, (cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 7:23; Matt
12:12; Lk 13:16</b>)? <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Jesus came to complete the Law and the Prophets, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 5:17</b>. His mission is to save, cf.<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"> Jn 12:47; Lk 19:10; 1Tim 1:15</b>. The
Sabbath does not prohibit any from doing good; “The Sabbath was made for man,
not man for the Sabbath” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 2:27</b>).
We must help our brothers and sisters always including Sundays.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Pharisees and their scribes asked Jesus why His disciples
did not fast like those of John and the Pharisees. He told them that the
wedding guests do not fast while they are with the bridegroom. He also told
them that a piece of new garment is not sewed on an old one nor new wine poured
into old wineskins. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Remember, the Pharisees and their scribes never believed in
Jesus. Consequently their question did not seek for clarification but to confirm
their belief that He is not from God, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn
9:29</b>. They have lots of reasons behind their belief. These include the
knowledge of His origin they thought they possess that contradicted the
prophecy about Him, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 7:27</b>.
Again, they did not know that Christ descended from David, and from Bethlehem,
the village where David was, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 7:42</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Sometimes, we see ourselves in the same mesh of seeking the
downfall of our brothers and sisters. This has no regard for the truth but just
the fall of the target even when it contradicts the truth. Jesus is the truth, cf.
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 14:6</b>. Whoever is against the
truth is against Jesus. It is the truth that sets people free, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 8:32</b>. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Gennesaret because the crowd was pressing in on Him. He asked Simon, the owner,
to put out a little from the shore. He then sat down and taught the people. He
later said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a
catch.” Although they laboured all night in vain, they obeyed Him and caught so
many fish. When Simon saw it, he pleaded at His feet, “Go away from me, Lord,
for I am a sinful man!” However Jesus said to him, “Do not be afraid; from now
on you will be catching people.” They left everything and followed Jesus.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Simon humbled himself before Jesus by acknowledging that he
was a sinner. Jesus did not throw him away instead, He fulfilled His promise,
“...whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 23:12; cf. Matt 18:4; Lk 14:11.18:14</b>). Jesus immediately
transformed them from fishermen to fishers of men. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

help. Remember, when Simon boasted that he would lay down his life for Jesus,

Silvia was born around 540 in Rome. Pope Felix III (483 - 492) was his
great-great-grandfather. He was well educated and excelled in all his studies.
Gregory was the Prefect of Rome. He converted his family villa in Rome into a
monastery (San Gregorio Magno al Celio) after his father’s death. As a monk, he
was hard and strict. Gregory was proclaimed pope by acclamation after the death
of Pope Pelagius II (579 – 590). He emphasized missionary work and also made
many changes in the Mass. His contributions to the development of the
plainchant (Gregorian Chant) is under dispute. Pope Gregory generously cared
for the poor. He suffered from arthritis in his last years and died on March
12, 604 AD. He was immediately proclaimed a saint by means of popular acclaim
and is venerated in the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican and

at Capernaum on a Sabbath because He spoke with authority. He also commanded
the demon in a demoniac and it came out of him without harming him. In
amazement, the people kept saying, “What kind of utterance is this? For with
authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and out they come!”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

attended by the cream of the society. Many judged it as one of the best in the
recent past because of the calibre of people that graced the occasion.
Similarly, in the Jewish culture “four categories of people could be invited to

Yet Jesus charged us, “... when you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite
your friends or your brothers or relations or rich neighbours, in case they may
invite you in return, and you would be repaid”. Jesus advised that “the poor,
the crippled, the lame, and the blind” whom even the bible excludes from coming
near the Lord should make the list, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lev
21:18</b>. Their only qualification is that “they cannot repay;” meaning that
they do not constitute any obstacle to eternal reward, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 6:35</b>.<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;"> <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">After reading today’s gospel a good number of times, one of
the questions that came to my mind is how would that wedding ceremony have been
judged if it was not attended by the people I have described earlier but by the
poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind? This sounds funny?</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">However, it is a caution for us to remember always that “our
citizenship is in heaven” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Phil 3:20</b>)
where “the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace
of his people he will take away from all the earth … (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Is 25:8; cf. Rev 7:17; 21:4</b>). As a result, no one should work just
for earthly rewards lest he/she looses the main reward from God, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 6:2, 5, 16</b>. This can be likened to
Jesus’ warning in Saint John’s gospel, “Do not work for food that perishes, but
for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you”
(<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 6:27</b>).</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">It is in acting contrary to the ways of the world that
guarantees that one “will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous”.
Rhetorically, Jesus asked, “What gain ... is it for anyone to win the whole
world and forfeit his life?” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 8:36,
TNJB</b>), cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 16:26</b>;<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"> Lk 9:25</b>. Christians are to act like
Christ (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 13:12-15</b>) which is
contrary to the world’s cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt
20:25-26</b>. If one prefers to be rewarded in the world to come he or she must
work towards that. In summary “Jesus says we should help those who cannot repay

behind every generosity – sense of duty, self-interest, feeling of superior,

out of love of God and their neighbours. We should always remember that all our
