of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief
priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised” (Lk 9:22).<o:p></o:p>

Afterwards, He warned, “If any want to become my followers,
let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Lk 9:23). Elsewhere He also warned, “you
will be hated by all for my name's sake” (Matt
10:22a; Mk 13:13a). Although these warnings are somehow scary He also
consoles, “But he who endures to the end will be saved” (Matt 10:22b; Mk 13:13b). In the gospel according to Saint John we also
read, “I will raise him up at the last day” (Jn 6:44). <o:p></o:p>

The last two verses of today’s gospel ought to ring like bells
always in our ears: “For those who want to save their life will lose it, and
those who lose their life for my sake will save it. What does it profit them if
they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves?” (Lk 9:24-25).<o:p></o:p>

Trying to please the world is very dangerous. Hence James
warns, “Unfaithful creatures! Do you not know that friendship with the world is
enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes
himself an enemy of God” (Jas 4:4). <o:p></o:p>

Christ’s story did not end in great suffering, rejection, and
death but in His resurrection on the third day. The third day comes after other
days (tribulations). Christians must live for the third day because there are
so many good things reserved for that day, cf. 1Cor 15:13-14.<o:p></o:p>

prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The ashes symbolize the nothingness of man. Because
of the effect of the COVID-19, the priest after blessing the ash says once: “Turn
away from sin and be faithful to the gospel” or “Remember, man, you are dust
and to dust you will return”. He then sprinkles the ashes on the heads of those
who come forward in silence. Ashes also symbolize grief for sin. And it can be
administered to all who come forward and is made from the palm branches blessed
the previous year's Palm Sunday. Ashes may also be delivered by a priest or any

Ash Wednesday falls between 4th February and 10th
March and is observed by many Western Christians, including Anglicans,
Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Roman Catholics. We are called to
imitate Christ who spent 40 days in the wilderness fasting<a href="file:///C:/Users/Fr.%20Moses/Desktop/Weekday%20Homilies/Daily%20Tonic%20for%20Year%20I%20(2020-2021)/Lent%20&amp;%20Easter/Ash%20Wednesday%20-%20Saturday%20after%20Ash%20Wednesday%20(2019).docx#_ftn2" name="_ftnref2" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn2;" title=""><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 110%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[2]</a>,

Topic: Pray, Fast, and Give Alms.<o:p></o:p>

In today’s gospel Jesus calls us to true almsgiving, prayer,
and fasting that can be rewarded in heaven. It is important to note that they
are interrelated. We are called to watch and pray, cf. Mk 14:38; Matt 26:41. As
one communicates with God through prayer, God helps him or her see others as his
or her brothers and sisters and also to know their needs. Again God helps us go
beyond knowing their needs to assisting them, cf. Jas 2:15-16. Helping one’s brothers and sisters is almsgiving. And
one cannot help unless he or she deprives him/herself something, fasting, cf. 2Cor 8:15. However, fasting does not
simply mean a reduction in our food, but the elimination of our evil habits<a href="file:///C:/Users/Fr.%20Moses/Desktop/Weekday%20Homilies/Daily%20Tonic%20for%20Year%20I%20(2020-2021)/Lent%20&amp;%20Easter/Ash%20Wednesday%20-%20Saturday%20after%20Ash%20Wednesday%20(2019).docx#_ftn3" name="_ftnref3" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn3;" title=""><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 110%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[3]</a>”.<o:p></o:p>

Although each and every one of us must have been praying,
fasting and giving alms, we can do better. In the words of Pope Saint Leo the
Great, <o:p></o:p>

Whatever steps forward we make, there is not one of us who is
not always bound to do better. All of us must strive hard and do so on Easter

The success of Lent hangs on these.<o:p></o:p>

As we begin the season of Lent, let us communicate with God often
through prayer. We must also bear in mind that all of us are brothers and
sisters and that whatever one has is for all, cf. Eph 4:6; Mal 2:10; 1Cor 10:24; 12:7. The good or the evil you do to
your brother or sister is done directly to God, cf. Matt 25:40,45. And we do not need trumpets for prayers, fasting, or
almsgiving lest we miss the reward. God sees everything and will certainly
reward all, cf. Job 28:24; 34:21; Ps
33:13; Matt 6:4, 6, 18.<o:p></o:p>

and the yeast of Herod.” They thought He said this because they hadn’t enough
bread. Jesus queried, <o:p></o:p>

Why
are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand?
Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears,
and fail to hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the
five thousand.... And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of
broken pieces did you collect?<o:p></o:p>

The disciples had witnessed a number of miracles yet when
Jesus warned them against the teachings of the Pharisees and Herod (cf. Matt 16:12) they thought it was because
they had not enough bread. Sometimes we also see ourselves behave in the same
way forgetting all He has done in us and around us. We need not be afraid
because He is always faithful, cf. Ps
31:5; 2Tim 2:12-13. <o:p></o:p>

We suffer trials for the genuineness of our faith to be
revealed, cf. 1Pt 1:6-7. <o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: How strong is your faith in God?<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: God, help us through the prayers of
Saints Cyril and Methodius to be always faithful – Amen.<o:p></o:p>

gospel. But Jesus replied them, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly
I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.” He then left them for
the other side.<o:p></o:p>

Many like the Pharisees still look for signs today. It is
important to note that generally, looking for a sign implies an existence of
doubt or lack of faith, cf. Jn 6:30.
This sometimes manifests itself as a test, cf. Matt 16:1; Mk 8:11; Lk 11:16. Although signs can as well be seen as
a mark of authenticity, (cf. Jn 6:14. 12:18)
however, lack of sign does not vitiate authenticity, cf. Jn 10:41.<o:p></o:p>

Jesus Christ was set as a sign by God, cf. Lk 2:34. God has shown us and is still
showing us many signs with our life as the chief. And we know that “the
testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple” (Ps 19:7).<o:p></o:p>

Let us cling to God and stop searching for signs. Who knows whether
He will like to show us further signs? Second book of Samuel reads, “This God –
his way is perfect; the promise of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all
those who take refuge in him (2Sam 22:31).
He will certainly fulfil all His promises.<o:p></o:p>

One man after
sojourning outside his country informed his parents and siblings of his
intention. They were very happy because they had not seen him for some time but
were startled at his wish that they should not let anyone know about his
intention to come home. After battling with it for some time, some of them went
about divulging the entire information at their disposal to whomever that cares.<o:p></o:p>

Later, the man
returned on the very date he had told them. It was a moment of great joy for
the entire family and some others who came to welcome him based on the
information some members of the family disseminated. However, the joy was cut
very short because that same night, armed robbers came and carted away
everything he came home with.

today, one can easily imagine what it was like in Jesus’ days. Judging from the
scriptures, it was one of the most dreaded diseases in Israel, cf. Lev 13:45-46. And the cure of leprosy
was beyond human capacity. Hence the king of Israel tore his clothes when
Naaman was sent to him by the king of Aram to be cured of leprosy, cf. 2Kg 5:1-7. But God who created
everything out of nothing by his words cures leprosy and do much more if he
chooses by his words, cf. Gen 1:1-31;
Heb 11:3; Ps 148:5; Mk 1:41.
<o:p></o:p>

As leprosy was one of the most
dreaded diseases, one would expect that whoever could cure that would have a
very high price. The gospel tells us what Jesus demanded from the leper he
cured: <o:p></o:p>

After sternly warning him he sent
him away at once, saying to him, ‘See that you say nothing to anyone; but go,
show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded,
as a testimony to them’ (Mk 1:43-44).<o:p></o:p>

Although, nobody would imagine
that the leper would go against the instruction clearly given to him by Jesus
but the gospel goes on to tell us what the man actually did and its
consequences: <o:p></o:p>

But he went out and began to
proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go
into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from
every quarter (Mk 1:45).<o:p></o:p>

Certainly, the leper just like
the family of the man we saw in our introductory story had his reasons but could
that be better than obeying God? We also saw the outcome of refusing to obey in
our opening story. <o:p></o:p>

What about us? Are we different? Jesus
tells us: “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what
his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard
from my Father I have made known to you” (Jn
15:15). And the preceding verse reads: “You are my friends if you do what I command you” (Jn 15:14). The Psalmist has this: “Blessed
are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart” (Ps 119:2). Jesus is also telling us, “Blessed
... are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (Lk 11:28; cf. Rev 1:3). Again in the letter of Saint James we also
read, “But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.
For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look
at themselves in a mirror” (Jas 1:22-23).<o:p></o:p>

God “is mindful of his covenant
forever, of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations” (1Chr 16:15). The Psalmist wrote, “But
the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who
fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his
covenant and remember to do his commandments” (Ps 103:17-18; cf. Ps 25:10). God ever does his part. The problem is
in listening to him and doing what he asks of us. In the book of Genesis, after
creating man and woman, God told them “...You may freely eat of every tree of
the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not
eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die” (Gen 2:16-17). When they kept to this instruction everything was
moving fine until they decided to go their own way by listening to Satan, cf. Gen 3: 1-19.<o:p></o:p>

Saint Paul rightly questioned, “For
who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counsellor?” (Rom 11:34; cf. 1Cor 2:16) It is always
better to hearken to the words of the Lord, cf. 1Sam 15:22.

<blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;"><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0 0 0 40px; padding: 0px;">I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with
me for three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their
homes, they will faint on the way–and some of them have come from a great
distance.</blockquote></blockquote></blockquote>

His disciples questioned, “How can one feed these people with
bread here in the desert?” They had forgotten that this same Jesus fed five
thousand with five loaves and two fish, cf. Mk 6:30-44. Again, He led the Israelites forty years in the
wilderness, their clothes did not wear out nor their sandals worn off their
feet, cf. Deut 29:5.<o:p></o:p>

We do ask similar questions. God made everything from nothing,
cf. Is 45:12; Heb 11:3. He is able
and willing to take care of all His creatures. Hence Jesus admonished, “...do
not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor
about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the
body more than clothing?” (Matt 6:25).
<o:p></o:p>

The crowd did not say even a word for Jesus to know their
difficulties. God is aware of what you go through. Finally, <o:p></o:p>

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but
with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able
to endure it (1Cor 10:13).</blockquote></blockquote></blockquote>

tells us how a deaf man who also had an impediment in his speech was brought to
Jesus for healing. <o:p></o:p>

He
took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his
ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed
and said to him, ‘Ephphatha,’ that is ‘Be opened.’ And immediately his ears
were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.<o:p></o:p>

Jesus
looked up to heaven because “Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made
heaven and earth” (Ps 124:8). And
the prophet Isaiah rightly noted that those “… who wait for the LORD shall
renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall
run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Is 40:31). <o:p></o:p>

We
all need the healing touch of Jesus in different areas of our lives. That Jesus
who restored the wholeness of the man is still at work and wants each and every
one of us to come to Him with our joys, pains, sorrows, disappointments,
heartbreaks, and so on. He can and is also willing to restore all of us to
wholeness because He came that we may have life and have it in full, cf. Jn 10:10. But we must turn to God for healing.<o:p></o:p>

circumstance, turn to God.<o:p></o:p>

anyone to know. But when a Gentile woman of Syrophoenician origin whose daughter
had an unclean spirit heard of Him, she came and bowed down at His feet and
begged Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. Jesus said to her, “Let the
children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw
it to the dogs.” She replied, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the
children’s crumbs.” On hearing this, Jesus said to her, “For saying that, you
may go–the demon has left your daughter.”<o:p></o:p>

Often we see ourselves saying what should not out of anger
forgetting the words of the Psalmist, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin
with my tongue; I will bridle my mouth, so long as the wicked are in my
presence” (Ps 39:1). An unguarded
tongue brings to ruin, cf. Ps 64:8. The
book of Proverbs reads, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and
those who love it will eat its fruits” (Prov
18:21).<o:p></o:p>

Tongue is for the singing of God’s praise, cf. Ps 119:172; Rom 14:11; Phil 2:11.
Hence, we read from the book of Proverbs, “The tongue of the righteous is
choice silver” (Prov 10:20a). Again,
“The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom” (Prov 10:31a; cf. Prov 12:18. 15:2).<o:p></o:p>

Although it is not easy to guard the tongue (cf. Jas 3:8), but Saint Peter advises, “He
that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and
his lips from speaking guile” (1Pt 3:10).
Sometimes we think we can get things by speaking harshly but the bible rightly
tells us, “With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break
a bone” (Prov 25:15). Remember the
last words of Jesus to the Gentile woman in today’s gospel, “For saying that, you may go–the demon has
left your daughter”. Let us go and imitate this noble woman.<o:p></o:p>

born in 480 of wealthy parents. She founded a religious community for women
near Monte Cassino at Plombariola. The twins visited each other once a year in
a farmhouse because Benedict was not permitted inside the monastery. According
to the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great, they spent their last day
together in prayer and conversation. Scholastica sensed her death was close at
hand and she begged Benedict to stay with her until the next day but he refused
because it was against his own Rule. She asked God and a severe thunderstorm
broke out, preventing Benedict and his monks from returning to the abbey. Benedict
cried out, “God forgive you, Sister. What have you done?” She replied, “I asked
a favour of you and you refused. I asked it of God and he granted it.” Three
days later, Benedict saw the soul of his sister rising heavenward in the form
of a white dove. Topic: Where the defiler is.<o:p></o:p>

Jesus said to the crowd, “Listen to me, all of you, and
understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but
the things that come out are what defile.” He explained this to His disciples in
these words, <o:p></o:p>

It is what comes out of a person that defiles. For it is from
within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft,
murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander,
pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.<o:p></o:p>

We recall that the Pharisees and some of the scribes from
Jerusalem in yesterday’s gospel frowned at what Jesus’ disciples did because
they were very much concerned about the tradition of the elders Mk 7:1-5. However, Jesus stressed in
today’s gospel where we ought to focus our attention, the self. Regrettably,
many rarely focus on themselves because of their belief that everything evil
comes from the outside, cf. Lk 6:42.
<o:p></o:p>

Dear friends, the defiler (the trouble) is within. It is
necessary to be mindful of our thoughts, words, actions, and inactions. This is
because God knows everyone of us very well, cf. Ps 139:1. And every person must stand and give account of his/her
life to God, cf. Rom 14:10.<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: The problem is within.<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: Lord, give us your grace that will
help us remove everything that defiles – Amen.<o:p></o:p>

Jesus and His disciples were attacked in today’s gospel by
the Pharisees and the scribes. Their reason was that some of the disciples ate
without first washing their hands according to the tradition of the elders. <o:p></o:p>

They abandoned God’s commandment for human tradition. Jesus
summarized this with a quotation from the prophet Isaiah, “This people honours
me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship
me, teaching human precepts as doctrines” (Mk
7:6-7; cf. Is 29:13).<o:p></o:p>

Tradition as “a belief, a custom, or way of doing something
that has existed for a long time”<a href="file:///C:/Users/Fr.%20Moses/Desktop/Weekday%20Homilies/Daily%20Tonic%20for%20Year%20I%20(2020-2021)/Ordinary%20Time%20(I)/Fifth%20Week%20in%20Ordinary%20Time%20(I)%20(2021).docx#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn1;" title=""><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 110%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[1]</a>
is very good and also necessary. However, tradition is not something static.
Borrowing the words of Archbishop Albert Kenechukwu Obiefuna of the blessed
memory, tradition grows, learns new things, goes to school, and so on. Recall
how we communicated with others especially those that were not living in the
same vicinity with us, how we travelled, how twins were treated, and so on.
Today, all these have changed in most parts of the world for good and their
changes have become parts of traditions.<o:p></o:p>

The problem we have today is not that of tradition but that every
form of idolatry and evil take place in the name of tradition. People have
rejected good aspects of the tradition of our elders like honesty, brotherly
love, and so on to perpetrate evils all in the name of tradition. And this is
what the church as the body of Christ condemns. We must live as God’s children.<o:p></o:p>

Thought for today: We are fools for Christ's sake (1Cor
4:10).<o:p></o:p>

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, assist us to live
as your children – Amen.<o:p></o:p>
