Year number 18 reads:<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"> “</b>Christ accomplished
the work of redemption and the perfect glorification of God principally through
his Paschal mystery, in which dying he destroyed our death and rising he
restored our life [cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Rom 5:8; 1Thess
5:10</b>]. Hence, the Sacred Easter Triduum of the Lord’s Passion and
Resurrection shines forth as the culmination of the whole liturgical year.” Sacred
Easter Triduum refers to Holy (Maundy) Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy
Saturday. These days are considered the three most sacred days and are
otherwise known as the Paschal Triduum. It begins with the Mass of the Lord’s
Supper.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In Sacred Easter
Triduum the Church makes present and fulfils the mystery of Christ’s passing
from the world to the Father, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn
16:28</b>. Before the beginning of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the
tabernacle is completely empty. Gloria is sung and the church bells may be rung
and then are silent until the Gloria of the Easter Vigil. The feet of selected people
are washed. After the Post Communion prayer, the Holy Eucharist is transferred
to an appropriate place (Altar of Repose). Every faithful is expected to spend
time with the Lord who calls us to stay awake and remain with him in adoration,
cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 26:38</b>. The altar is later completely
stripped. Crucifixes are either removed from the church or veiled. Christ has
been delivered into the hands of sinners to suffer the most ignoble death for
us to live, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 26:45</b>; <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Thess 5:10, 1Jn 4:9</b>. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">In this Mass, we celebrate among
others two main mysteries: the institution of the sacrament of the Holy
Eucharist and the command to be others’ slave, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 10:44</b>. The Holy Eucharist is the sacrament of love. It is the
celebration of Christ’s giving of himself for us which is the greatest form of
love, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 15:13</b>. Therefore
participation in the Holy Eucharist is participation in Christ’s love.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">However, receiving the Holy Eucharist is not a mark of being
good Christian. Jesus tells us: “By this all men will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love for one another” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 13:35</b>). Again, Judas received it before all of us and we know
what it brought for him, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 13:21-27</b>.
Participating in Christ’s love and the call to love others are inseparable.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">In the gospel according to Saint Mark we read: </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt 0.7in;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-size: large;">“</span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><sup><span style="font-size: small;">42</span></sup></b><span style="font-size: large;">... You know that among the Gentiles those whom they
recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants
over them. </span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><sup><span style="font-size: small;">43</span></sup></b><span style="font-size: large;">But it is
not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your
servant, </span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><sup><span style="font-size: small;">44</span></sup></b><span style="font-size: large;">and whoever
wishes to be first among you must be slave of all” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 10:42-44</b>).</span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">In the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, Jesus is both the
victim and the priest, and in giving the new commandment, he was also both the
teacher and the instructional material. It is important to note that in the
Jewish tradition, it is the function of slaves to wash others’ feet. So, the
washing of feet in this Mass is a symbolical representation of the humility of
Christ, who “... came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a
ransom for many” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 20:28</b>, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 10:45</b>). </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">In one parish, the catechist after selecting people for the
washing of the feet submitted their names to the parish priest. Among these was
the name of a man who opposes everything the parish priest says and does. On
seeing this, he quickly asked the catechist, ‘Why not include Satan in the list?’
Remember that Christ washed the feet of all the apostles including that of Judas.
If we select only those we considered as our friends, what are we doing?</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">One priest during the meeting of the bishop and his priests referred
to the bishop as an unworthy bishop and the bishop reacted quickly. For the
bishop, the priest just insulted him but the priest reminded him that he (the
bishop) has been referring to himself during the consecration and while
addressing them as an unworthy bishop (servant). And the bishop retorted “But
you mean the one you just said now.” “So you never meant what you have been
saying?” queried the priest. And there was silence. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">St. Augustine rightly admonishes us to approach the Holy
Eucharist humbly, ponder worthily so great a favour, and be aware that we must
be ready to do for others what Christ first did for us (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Divine Office II, 1974, p. 277</b>). Christ is saying to all of us: </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-size: large;">“</span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><sup><span style="font-size: small;">13</span></sup></b><span style="font-size: large;">You call me Teacher and Lord–and you are right for
that is what I am. </span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><sup><span style="font-size: small;">14</span></sup></b><span style="font-size: large;">So
if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one
another’s feet. </span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><sup><span style="font-size: small;">15</span></sup></b><span style="font-size: large;">For I
have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 13:13-15</b>).</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">Pray for ministerial priests in a special way today because
the Holy Eucharist cannot be celebrated without ministerial priest. Hence, we
celebrate today also the ordination of the first set of ministerial priests – the
apostles by Christ himself. Once more, pray for priests today. Finally, I need your

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Yesterday, we identified a hardened heart as the most deadly
disease. In today’s gospel, Judas was paid thirty pieces of silver by the chief
priests for the betrayal of Jesus. He was already strategizing on how to
execute this plan before Jesus’ Passover with them (the apostles).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">And while at table, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you
will betray me.” The gospel captured the apostles’ feelings in these words,
“And they became greatly distressed.” No need adding with the exception of the
betrayer. They asked Him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?” Jesus
replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray
me.” He also warned of the impending danger, “The Son of Man goes as it is
written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would
have been better for that one not to have been born.” To show how deadly a hardened
heart is, despite all these Judas courageously asked Him, “Surely not I Rabbi?”
Jesus replied, “You have said so.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We see Judas in today’s gospel trying to cover up his
hardened heart with hypocrisy thereby complicating the matter. And none of the
other apostles knew what he had in mind otherwise their reaction would have
been more serious than when they felt that James and John were trying to hijack
the apostolic college, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 20:20-24</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">One of the things Jesus repeated a number of times is the
role one of His apostles would play in His death. It is also in today’s gospel,
“Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me.” The reaction of His disciples
and especially the question asked by John led Jesus into being more direct. He replied
“‘It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the
dish.’ So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of
Simon Iscariot.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">However, despite all these Judas did not move an inch. What
could have been his problem? The gospel describes him as a thief, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 12:6</b>. Money according to the book of
Ecclesiastes “answers everything” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Eccl
10:19</b>). Yet “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money; nor he
who loves wealth, with gain: this also is vanity” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Eccl 5:10</b>). Through the prophet Isaiah God invites us to come to
Him and be satisfied at no cost. cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Is
55:1</b>. He worries why we spend our energy in useless things, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Is 55:2</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Word of God is preached today more than ever. And the central
message of every gospel that deserves the name is “... repent, and believe in
the gospel” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 1:15; cf. Mk 1:4</b>). Yet
we find it difficult to accept the gospel especially when it touches the area
we consider sacred like the Pharisees, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk
16:1-14</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Hardening of the heart kills more than any other deadly
disease. Judas among others suffered this. Dear friends, let us harden our
hearts no longer but repent and believe the gospel (cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Ps 95:8</b>). The money Judas pursued to the extent of betraying Jesus did
not profit him anything, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt 27:3-5</b>.

visited the house of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. Martha as usual served at the
table and Lazarus was one of those at the table with Jesus. And “Mary took a
pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them
with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” Judas
Iscariot who could not hold himself reacted, “Why was this perfume not sold for

been given a thought. However, the gospel also tells us of Judas’ intention, “He
said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he
kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Each and every one of us has wonderful plans of how to ‘better’
a lot of things. But why do we want things better – for the common good or to
feed the Judas in us? Remember, “what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the
heart, and this is what defiles” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt
15:18</b>). Again, “...the love of money is the root of all evils; it is
through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced
their hearts with many pangs” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Tim 6:10</b>).
If we do not purify our intentions, what would have brought commendation might
end up bringing condemnation. Be careful. We all have Judas in us. However, the
difference lies in who controls each person, Holy Spirit or the Judas.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">Today has different names because
of different reasons. It is called the 6th or the Last Sunday of Lent because
it comes after the 5th Sunday of Lent and also the Last Sunday before Easter. Today
is also called Palm Sunday because today Christians go to church with either
palms or branches from other trees according to different regions of the world
to commemorate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem as a King amidst the crowd who
spread their clothes and tree branches on the road shouting “Blessed is the
king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the
highest heaven!” cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk 19:38</b>. It is
also called the Passion Sunday because the story of Christ’s suffering and
death is read today. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">This Sunday opens the Holy Week; the week we celebrate the
mysteries of our salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his
earthly life, from his messianic entry into Jerusalem, until his blessed
Passion and glorious Resurrection. Holy Week is dedicated to the celebration of
penance. Lent continues until Maundy Thursday.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">The Passion we read today reminds me of one woman from a
wealthy family. She thought she fell in love with one man who did not have a
serious means of livelihood and later got married to him. As a result, this
woman although she had been duped in the past by various people introduced her
husband to her line of business thinking that she had nothing to fear because
the man would see it as his own business and would also do anything possible to
see it stand.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">All started well. The man was very happy that he could eat
well anytime and anywhere. But one day, the woman came back from a business
trip and the man was nowhere to be found despite the fact that he knew that she
would return on that day. At first, although she was surprised at but not much
disturbed by his not being around to welcome her but later became terribly worried
when she discovered that her husband’s personal belongings were also not around.
Her neighbours later told her that the man left more than a week ago after siphoning
her bank account to an unknown destination. </span></div>

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">All that happened to Jesus were all prophesied by
the prophets before his coming, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Matt
26:24, Mk 9:12; 14:21, Lk 18:31; 22:22</b> among other passages. Those who
interacted with Jesus while here on earth as a man can be divided into various
groups which include – the crowd, his disciples, and the apostles (the most
intimate group) and Judas was one of the apostles. While at the Passover meal
with the twelve (the apostles) He said to them: “...see, the one who betrays me
is with me, and his hand is on the table” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk
22:21</b>). This statement threw all of them into distress with the exception
of the architect of His betrayal, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lk
22:23</b>. This Passion narrative reveals among other things that Jesus’ pain was
not just from the fact that He was dying but that He was dying through the
instrumentality of an intimate friend, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Ps
55:13</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I was at Enugu–Nigeria repairing my car when some
young men engaged themselves in a discussion about the passion of Jesus. They
wondered why Judas allowed himself to be used. Each and every one of them was
of the opinion that he would not allow himself to be used. That discussion
caught my attention. And I asked myself among other questions: ‘Is Jesus still
in agony because of the betrayal of Judas?’ Reflect on these.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 7pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We remember that all that happened to Jesus was
foretold before His coming. But all these He went through was for a purpose.
According to Saint Peter in his first Letter the essence of Christ’s death is that
He might bring us to God, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">1Pt 3:18</b>.
The author of the Letter to the Hebrews put it thus: “But we see Jesus, who for
a little while was made lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honour
because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste
death for everyone” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Heb 2:9</b>). Jesus
came and abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the
gospel, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">2Tim 1:10</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Just as Jesus chose Judas as His close friend, He has
also made me and you His close friends by making known to us all that He heard
from the Father, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 15:15</b>. He demonstrated
this by dying for us. Hence we read in the gospel, “Greater love has no man
than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn 15:13</b>). The question is, ‘despite the fact that Jesus suffered terribly
and died most ignobly to make us friends of God, are we really friends of God?’
Remember the words of Jesus: “<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">You are my
friends if you do what I command you</b>” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jn
15:14</b>). And it is only by being faithful in trials unto death that one will
earn the crown of life God has prepared for us, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Rev 2:10</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

story went through not just because her money was taken away but through whom.
Being Jesus’ friends consoles him for Judas’ betrayal. Failing to be His friend
makes nonsense of everything he went through. Sin brought death which Jesus
came and saved us from, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Jas 1:15</b>.
The palms (branches) we carry symbolise our lives, our desires, and so on. Laying
them down therefore is a symbolical laying down of our lives, our desires and
so on for Christ. Do not see these palms just like</span> the crowd who spread
their clothes and tree branches on the road shouting because they were the
people who also shouted even louder, “Crucify him, Crucify him” <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Mk 15:13, 14</b>. Paul rightly wrote “many
… live as enemies of the cross of Christ” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Phil
3:18</b>).</span></span></div>

1:16.18-21.24a</b>) tells us about the great saint we are celebrating. Mary the
mother of Jesus who had been engaged to Joseph was found to be with child from
the Holy Spirit. The bible goes on to tell us, “being a righteous man and
unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly.”
And in a dream the angel of the Lord told him how it all happened and instructed
him to take his wife. And, “When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel
of the Lord commanded him.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;">In the life of Saint Joseph we see in action what we
reflected on yesterday, </span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #292929; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;">Think
before acting</span></b><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;">. If he
was impulsive in his action, he wouldn’t have had the time he needed to plan on
what to do. And it was legitimate for him to expose Mary to public ridicule and
shameful death, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Lev 20:10</b>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 10pt 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri";"><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;">We have a lot of lessons to learn from the life of Saint
Joseph. Although according to laws we have right to a lot of things yet we must
be careful lest we hurt our brothers and sisters. One’s right can be forfeited
for a higher right, cf.</span> <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;">Matt 19:12</span></b><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;">. Again, we are called to do God’s
will and not ours, cf. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">2Tim 2:26; Heb
13:21</b>. Joseph is a wonderful example. He took Mary as commanded by God contrary

gospel to throw at Jesus. They never had difficulty picking stones against
Jesus even when they were not actually provoked. In today’s gospel pericope, although
they had nothing against His works but they judged His words blasphemous. They also
tried to arrest Him but Jesus escaped from their hands and went away again
across the Jordan. People went to Him and also testified that although “John
performed no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.” <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

before acting. And this singular yet regular mistake has led us into many regrettable
actions. The book of Proverbs reads “A man of quick temper acts foolishly, but
a man of discretion is patient” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Prov
14:17</b>). And the book of Ecclesiastes correctly admonishes, “Be not quick to
anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools” (<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Eccl 7:9</b>).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Peter expressed their ordeals, he went on to say “Yet if you say so, I will let
down the nets.” And “When they had done this, they caught so many fish that
their nets were beginning to break.” Peter pleaded with Jesus to leave them yet

his freedom and became a priest, he went back to the land of his captivity and
preached the gospel tirelessly. His apostolate was so much felt that he is not celebrated

<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 110%;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Each and every one of us has history dented with lots of
things including setbacks, mistakes, anxieties, disappointments, difficulties,
and so on. Some of us have even terribly resigned to fate and cannot see any
future again. Today’s gospel and the life of the Saint Patrick encourage us to
listen to Jesus as He instructs us. Let no one be tied down by his/her past. God
still has better plans for you and me. He will do a new thing in our lives, cf.
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Is 43:19; Jer 31:22</b>. He only demands
us to obey Him like Peter and his colleagues and continue to move on after the
example of Saint Patrick. If we do these, we will be amazed at what God will turn
